Samsung is considering to secure system semiconductors from the outside foundries

As a way for diversifying their production network, the System LSI business department of Samsung Electronics is working hard for the shipment of production from another party for securing stable production infrastructure by collaborating with the outside foundries as their foundry business is on track because of orders from big customers.

LSI which is an abbreviation for Large-Scale-Integration, is a process of making chip in which many transistors are embedded or integrated onto a single chip of silicon chip. Foundry refers to a fabrication of a semiconductor plant operation.

According to some related industries, the System LSI division of Samsung has just recently contacted some global foundry businesses. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) might be a possible contractor as it can produce the 7-nanometer (nm) chips, however the world’s largest producer of microchip has declined to confirm. A Samsung official said that they could not confirm any of the related information at the time.

TSMC is the largest devoted independent foundry of semiconductor in the world. In the year 2018, Samsung and TSMC started the mass production of the 7 nm devices. Their process offerings of 7nm are similar to the 10 nm process of Intel. If a contract was sealed, Samsung would be able to secure system semiconductors from the outside foundries.

Samsung alienated its foundry business in the year 2017. System LSI was only responsible for the research and development also for designing the system semiconductors, whereas the foundry business was in charge of the consignment production and also for minimizing the concerns regarding the leakage of the technologies.

The Exynos 9820 of Samsung is basically a premium mobile application processor (AP) which is powerful enough for processing tasks that are related to artificial intelligence (AI) by itself, which is ideal for smart devices.
